Dating in Online Games
I wrote an article a couple of years ago about WoW weddings that continues to get massive traffic and loads of comments even today. The article was actually about faux weddings in the game World of Warcraft (i.e. Where to get a tux and wedding dress, engagement ring, etc.) but the comment section took on a life of its own as people talked about their feelings regarding Internet relationships via online gaming.
Some people are highly against the idea, stating that it’s stupid or childish or even downright unsafe and ridiculous. Others expressed that they met their significant other in a video game and many went on to get married have children and even remain together years later.
One of the most important points made is a commenter who says, “I want to know how meeting on WoW is any different than internet dating websites.” This is a fantastic point. Meeting in a video game is no different than meeting in a chat room, a message board, an online support group or even a dating website.

I think as technology continues to advance, we will see more couples hooking up online, even through video games and it will become less controversial and shocking. However, I think it’s very important that people who want to date someone they have met in an online game practices the right safety precautions.
No matter how well you think you know someone from playing a game together or chatting online, predators are out there. It’s important to be safe while being open to dating in online games.
